"The Vulnerable Warrior"

Jag läste nyligen några intressanta artiklar i e-tidskriften 'Critical Studies in Fashion and Beauty', en av dem var skriven av forskaren Patrícia Soley-Beltran och handlar om modellers egna reflektion över frågor som rollspel, viktkontroll och fotoretuschering m.m. Patrícia är själv fd modell, och bilden ovan är tagen på henne någon gång under 80-talet. Hon kallar den för "The vulnerable warrior" och skriver att hennes roll som modell ofta var att le och se mycket glad ut (tänk det glada 80-talet!), men att denna bild är tagen i slutet av hennes karriär, då hon ej kunde le längre utan få muskelspasmer. 
Jag tycker det är ett väldigt fängslande och vackert foto! (Och jag kan inte låta bli att notera hennes fina, naturliga ögonbryn, ögonbrynsfixerad som jag är!)

I recently read some interesting articles in the e-journal 'Critical Studies in Fashion and Beauty'. One of them was writen by scholar Patrícia Soley-Beltran and is about models own thoughts on issues like role playing, weight control and photoshopping etc. Patrícia is herself an ex model, and she is on the photo above, which is taken sometime during the 80s. She calls the photo "The vulnerable warrior" and writes that she often performed a very happy, smiling character during her modelling career (think the happy 80s!). But that this picture was taken at the end of her career, at a time when she was simply unable to smile without incurring into facial muscular spasms.

I think this photo is very beautiful and captivating! (And I can't help but noticing her nice and natural eyebrows, eyebrow fixated as I am!)

Style Like U!

Häromdagen hittade jag en fantastisk sida som heter Stylelikeu. Här finns mängder av videointervjuer (536 st hittills) med stilinspiratörer, där de pratar om sin personliga stil och jag tycker att skaparna bakom har fått till en bra blandning av människor! De har även andra videos på teman som garderobsbyte mellan främlingar, och personliga hängivelser; som att vissa samlar på läppstift eller ballerinaskor eller vad det nu må vara, vi dras alla till olika saker.
Jag älskar den här sidan! Jag gillar att höra människor tala engagerat om varför de klär sig som de gör och leverera smarta citat om stil. Som exempelvis Larry B ovan som säger något i stil med "Fashion isn't clothes and labels. There's no need stressing about things, it's only you that's stressing, everybody's looking like you like 'calm down & move on'. I'm interested in you and where you come from, and there's so much more in you, you're enough."

The other day I found this amazing site called Stylelikeu. On it there's loads of video interviews (536 so far) with inspirational people talking about their personal style, and I think that the creators behind this site has chosen a really nice mixture of people too! There's also other videos on themes such as 'second skin', where people exchange wardrobes with each other, and 'addictions', where people talk about why they're into lipsticks or ballet flats, or whatever their obsession is.

I love this site! I love listening to people talking with enthusiasm about why they dress like they do, and delivering clever lines about style. For example Larry B above, who says something like "Fashion isn't clothes and labels. There's no need stressing about things, it's only you that's stressing, everybody's looking like you like 'calm down & move on'. I'm interested in you and where you come from, and there's so much more in you, you're enough."

Frida Hyvönen "Terribly Dark"

De senaste dagarna har jag lyssnat mycket på Frida Hyvönens nya singel "Terribly Dark", och jag ser fram emot skivsläppet den 11 april! Låten får mig minnas en intervju med henne för några år sedan, där intervjuaren blev perplex när Frida på frågan om vad hon själv tycker om för musik, svarade att hon ej lyssnar på musik. Men, jag tycker att det går att märka i 80-känslan, som att hennes referens är hennes minnen av musik. Intervjun var utförd i hennes hem på landsbygden i norra Sverige, och jag tänker mig att denna låt är komponerad där en mörk vinterdag. Och låtens text och vädret den sista tiden får mig att tänka att våren i år kanske inte kommer förrän Valborg?
Jag är ett selektivt fan av Fridas musik då jag tycker att vissa låtar är lite för deppiga för min smak, men hursomhelst, i detta fall tycker jag att låten är peppande och bra (men att videon är lite väl, eh mörk)!

These last few days I've been listening a lot to Frida Hyvönen's new single "Terribly Dark", and I'm looking forward to the release of her new album on April 11th! The song makes me recall an interview with her some years back, and how perplexed the interviewer was when Frida, as a reply to the question of what music she listens to, said that she doesn't listen to music. The 80's feeling to her music makes me think that her musical references therefore might be her own memories of music. The interview was held in her home in the countryside of northern Sweden, and I can imagine that this song was composed there on a dark winter's day. And the song's lyrics and the weather lately makes me think that spring this year might not arrive until Valborg? 

I am a selective fan of Frida's music, as I think that some of her songs are a bit too blue for my taste. But anyhow, I think this song is uplifting and nice (but that the video is a bit, eh dark)!

Minimarket SS11 & SS12

Förra våren tyckte jag att ovanstående trenchcoat och skor ifrån Minimarket var väldigt fina, och så tyckte antagligen fler än jag för i år är de tillbaka, och om detta har Minimarket skrivit på sin webshop:

'The most sought after trenchcoat last spring is here to stay', 'A success that is here to stay - Shoe Cut Out was sold out in a blaze last spring and upon your request she is back in business'.
Jag tycker att fenomenet att återanvända design är intressant, jag har själv varit med om att två tröjor jag har köpt återigen var till försäljning ett år senare, detta var dock på mer budgetvänliga H&M och Lindex ehum, men iallafall... Detta får mig att känna förtröstan över det faktum att klädmodet nog inte alltid rör sig så snabbt som det kan hävdas. För när det talas om hur klädtrender går snabbare och snabbare kan jag ibland tänka, verkligen? Har inte exempelvis stuprörsjeans varit inne väldigt länge nu? Jag tycker snarare det sker vissa få förändringar varje år som sedan hänger med ett tag. Som exempelvis att silver och orange kändes väldigt hett för ett år sedan, och fortfarande gör det, och att neon nu känns väldigt nytt och går att hitta lite här och var som detaljfärg.
Jag minns att jag en gång för länge sedan (när jag var tonåring) läste i en modetidning (jag tror det var ELLE) att en klädtrend håller i cirka tre år. Jag vet inte om det stämmer helt, och det var ju som sagt länge sedan detta skrevs, men det tilltalar den organiserade och matematiska nörden i mig. Att bara man hoppar på tåget tidigt så kan man känna sig lugn (i tre år det vill säga). Och förhoppningsvis matchar de trender som uppkommer ungefär samtidigt varandra, så att man exempelvis ständigt slipper dra i den korta tröjan matchat med de lågt skurna jeansen à la sent 90-tal / tidigt 2000-tal.
Personligen är jag väldigt sugen på en trenchcoat i en enkel modell som Minimarkets ovan. Liknande modeller finns på COS, H&M och InWear. Liknande skomodeller finns på Topshop, och har tidigare även funnits hos COS och Jeffrey Campbell.

Last spring I thought the above trench coat and shoes from Swedish label Minimarket looked really nice. Apparently many people shared my view because this year thery're back, and Minimarket has written this statement on their web shop: 

'The most sought after trenchcoat last spring is here to stay', 'A success that is here to stay - Shoe Cut Out was sold out in a blaze last spring and upon your request she is back in business'.

I find this phenomenon of returning pieces an interesting one, I've personally experienced that two tops I'd bought were yet again for sale one year later, this was at more budget friendly H&M and Lindex ehum, but still... This gives me a feeling of reassurance that fashion isn't always moving as fast as people might say. Because when the faster speed of fashion is mentioned, I sometimes think to myself, really? Hasn't for example skinny jeans been popular for a  really long time time now? In my opinion, there's a few changes to fashion each year which tend to stick around for some time. For instance, the colours orange and silver felt hot last year and still do, and now neon colours is the new thing which can be found as a detail colour on just about everything.  

I remember that I once read a long time ago (when I was a teenager) in a fashion magazine (I believe it was Elle) that a fashion trend lasts for three years. I'm not sure that's completely true, and it was yet again a long time ago this was written, but it speaks to the mathematical and organized nerd within me. That, if you just jump on a trend early, you can feel calm (for three years that is). And hopefully, the trends that arise in the same time frame match each other, so that you don't for example constantly need to pull down your short top matched with your low-rise jeans à la late 90s / early 2000s. 

Personally, I'm very into a trech coat in a simple, clean model just like Minimarket's above. Similar ones are to be found at COS, H&M and InWear. Similar shoe models are found at Topshop, and COS and Jeffrey Campbell used to have similar looking ones.

Gwyneth Paltrow for Lindex

Idag släpps kollektionen 'modern preppy' på Lindex, och snygga Gwyneth Paltrow frontar kampanjen. Jag säger som talkshow-värden Jonathan Ross 'looking good in the cheaper clothes'! Jag tycker hon ser fantastisk ut i den randiga kjolen, och jag gillar såklart att även hon måste ligga i för att se så bra ut, det inspirerar mig! 

Today Swedish Lindex is releasing the collection 'modern preppy', and beautiful Gwyneth Paltrow is fronting the campaign. Like the talkshow host Jonathan Ross, I'm saying 'looking good in the cheaper clothes'! I think she looks fabulous in that striped skirt, and of course I also really like the fact that even she has to put a lot of work into looking that good, it inspires me!

Beauty Super Savings

Jag tänkte dela med mig av ett generellt (och kanske välkänt) skönhetstips: att man kan spara mycket pengar på att köpa skönhetsprodukter på nätet! 

Här kommer en lista på några av de webshops som jag har använt mig av:

-Ebay Jag har aldrig haft några problem när jag har beställt ifrån olika säljare på Ebay, alla produkter har kommit fram. Ibland har det dock tagit lång tid, upp till tre-fyra veckor när jag har beställt ifrån USA. Tänk på att skaffa ett Paypal-konto att betala med innan du sätter igång!

-Feelunique är en webshop med ett stort utbud som även har gratis frakt. Här har jag bla köpt Bare Minerals startkit för ca 420 kr jämfört med 1000 kr i vanlig butik. De har väldigt ofta rabatterbjudanden av typen köp för £30 få £3 i rabatt etc, det brukar vara större procentuell rabatt ju mer man handlar för. Man kan söka på "Feelunique voucher code" på nätet för att se om det finns något aktuellt erbjudande, eller kan man skriva upp sig för att få deras nyhetsbrev med erbjudanden på mailen, och på FB har de även ibland andra erbjudanden som gäller bara en dag. Man får även alltid 10% rabatt på ett enskilt skönhetsmärke man väljer själv, detta märke kan man byta en gång per halvår. 

-Lookfantastic har även de ett stort utbud, och numera också fri frakt. Deras rabatterbjudanden brukar se ut som Feeluniques, och för tillfälltet har de vårrea!

-Beautybay tror jag numera även har fri frakt, här har jag bland annat köpt produkter ifrån Mario Badescu, ett märke som inte är så vanligt förekommande.

-Everydayminerals är ett amerikansk mineralsminksmärke. De har bra priser och man kan beställa upp till sju prover gratis, man betalar bara för portot som är på lite drygt $3, och ett prov håller länge, 1-2 månader ungefär. Jag älskar deras flat top brush, den är väldigt mjuk och ger snabbt täckning.

-Ekoprincess har jag beställt en del ifrån på sista tiden, då de har ekologiska produkter till rimliga priser, tryck på gilla-knappen på FB för att ej missa rabatterbjudanden.

-Jag gillar utbudet i British Curlies Store och Curlmart, då de har många naturliga hårprodukter som är sulfat- och silikonfria, men tyvärr är frakten fruktansvärt dyr så det är inte ofta jag beställer ifrån dem. Min favorit här är Darcy's Botanicals Pumpkin Seed Conditioner.

-Sedan finns det såklart fler webshops, det verkar finnas en hel uppsjö av dem! Jag tror det kan vara enklast att söka på nätet efter den produkt man vill köpa, för att sen jämföra priset i de olika web-butiker som dyker upp, samt att söka på Ebay. Tänk på att inkludera fraktpriset när du jämför priset, och glöm inte heller att kolla efter rabatterbjudanden, de dyker ofta upp i många web-butiker! 

I thought I'd share with you a general (and perhaps well-known) beauty tip: the fact that you can save a lot of money by purchasing your beauty products online! Here's a list of some of the web shops that I've used: 

-Ebay I've never had any problems when ordering products from different ebay sellers, I've always received the items I've ordered. A few times the shipping time has been quite long though, up to three-four weeks when I've ordered producs from the US. Remember to get yourself a Paypal account before you get started! 

-Feelunique is a beauty web shop with a wide assortment of beauty labels, and they also have free worldwide delivery. From here I've for example bougth the Bare Minerals Starter Kit for about 420 Sek, which is 1000 Sek in Swedish stores. They often offer discounts of the type buy for £30 and get £3 off etc, the discount percentage is higher the more you spend. You can find current offers if you search for "Feelunique voucher code" on the internet, or you can sign up for their newsletter to subscribe to their offers through email, and sometimes they post other daily offers on their FB page. You also always get 10% off your favourite brand, and you can change that brand every six months.

-Lookfantastic also has a wide selection of brands, and they're now likewise offering free delivery. Their discounts are ususally similar to Feelunique's, and at this very moment they're having a spring sale!

-Beautybay has also started to offer free worldwide delivery lately, and from here I've for example purchased products from Mario Badescu, a brand that I haven't seen on other beauty web shops.

-Everydayminerals is an American mineral make up label. Their prices are fairly low, and you can order up to seven samples for free, they only charge you for the postage which is a bit over $3 to Sweden. A foundation sample lasts for about 1-2 months. I love their flat top brush, it's very soft and makes covering quick. 

-Ekoprincess is a Swedish Eco-Beauy online store that I've ordered from a couple of times lately, I think their prices are fair. Be sure to press the like button on FB to not miss out on any offers.

-I like the range in British Curlies Store and Curlmart, as they have many natural hair product without any sulfates and silicones, but it's very rarely that I order from them since their shipping costs to Sweden are immensely high. My favourite from here is Darcy's Botanicals Pumpkin Seed Conditioner.

-And of course there are more beauty web shops out there, there really seems to be plenty of them to say the least! I think the easiest way might be to search on the internet for the product that you want to buy, and then to compare the price in the online stores that show up, and to also do a search on Ebay. Remember to include the shipping cost when you compare prices, and don't forget to look for discount codes, they're frequent in many web shops!
